Hindi ako techie. If ever I was, I am a wannabe too. I may know the newest gadgets out in the market but if you ask me about specs and the technical stuff about a certain gadget, my mind goes blank. As in total blank. In fact, I’m so non-techie that it was only weeks ago before I understood what RAM is for. (yes, as explained by my cousin to me.)

So whenever I buy new gadgets, I make sure it pass these criteria:

1) I make it a point to test out the product for myself

2) read good reviews of that certain product in the net

3) it is recommended by someone I know.

When I bought my ASUS,  I was able to test out an ASUS before owning one for myself. My cousin had an ASUS netbook before I did; so I was able to borrow from him to check it out for myself. I did have qualms buying my own ASUS since one, I already own a laptop; two, I wasn’t sure if small laptops are for me and three, what will I use it for?

My qualms over having a smaller laptop (or in this case,a netbook) means you have to sacrifice the size of the monitor and board. That made me think whether I could adjust myself from the regular sized laptop to a smaller netbook. But after trying out an ASUS for a few times, I knew the smaller didn’t bugged me but having smaller keypads means I still need to adjust myself to.

Trying out my friend’s ASUS, which made me decide to buy one for myself. (while traveling in Taiwan)

But in the end, I did chose to buy an ASUS netbook.  Want to know why?

One major reason why I bought an ASUS netbook instead of other competing  brands was it’s price point. Its way more cheaper than other brands- and living on a student’s allowance ain’t easy at all. My ASUS was bought using my own money and my own savings. I value every peso I used to purchase it. It was a good investment and the price is quite affordable without busting anyone’s pocket.

Two, I chose ASUS because it received good recommendations/reviews from the net and people I know. I most value word of mouth recommendations so when I asked tito doods (who is the most techie in our fam) which laptop/netbook he can recommend under my budget. He then said two brands-One was ASUS and the other would no longer be named here. Again, the two brands my tito mention was okay for me, but the first reason was what pushed me to buying ASUS instead of the other brand. Price difference of the two brand was almost 11K, so it wasn’t a hard choice at all.

Three, quality quality quality. When I speak of quality, I mean how long it can stand me.You see,I’m not good when it comes to my gadgets. I can be “burarara” with my gadgets, my gadgets usually either gets scratched, fell, or spilled with food/liquid. So I choose gadgets that are developed with either hard case shells and other protective measures companies developed for their gadgets. Or other times, I just buy good protective accessories for it, just to make sure.I am also no good with fixing computer problems at all. If it gets busted, you usually would see me calling either my brothers, cousins or just bring it over to the service centers to have them fix my laptop.Yes, thats how non-techie I am. I truly believed an ASUS works for me. (Well till now, my ASUS is doing well, no problem at all. And yes, I once spilled water at some parts of the keyboard.. Still A-OK. :))

Related to no. 3, I choose brands with Service Centers here in the Philippines. Had already a bad experience over some items that were bought overseas and instead of “saving”, we ended up spending more to have it freight back and forth to have it fixed. That was freight+ surcharge+ repair fee+ cost of the part that was broken. The total amount almost cost as much as half of the cost of that item. tsk tsk. Lesson learned, it is better to buy gadgets here in the Philippines (which is better if you must return/exchange it due to defects) and it is better to choose brands with Service centers already established here in the Philippines.

Related again to the 3rd and 4th, Brand for me is important. The credibility of the company for me stands how good their products are. If a company holds good credibilities over the market, then it must be doing something right in developing in their products. Good company reflects good products. So when I’ve learned how huge ASUS is over the ASIAN market, I realized this company may as well compete to other computer brands out in the market.

Fifth, Size does matter. Even if I had qualms before about sacrificing the size of my monitor and the keyboard, I know smaller laptops/netbook is what I need. I bring my laptop almost everywhere and everyday. School, travels, Malls, commuting to the LRT/MRT and most of all, traveling from Manila to my province. It’s not easy nor is it safe to travel via public bus from Manila to my hometown with a laptop in tow. We have to be practical nowadays. In today’s world, you could practically could come across a robber anywhere. So for me, I needed a laptop/netbook which was small enough to carry and place inside my normal bag.

My laptop vs my ASUS. Size does matter for me.

Sixth, capacity and function. I chose an ASUS because I realized it function as well as my laptop. I was able to do the usual things I do with my laptop with my ASUS. Function wise, ASUS did well. Capacity wasn’t a problem either. I experienced having opened so many windows and tabs over my ASUS and it didn’t hanged at all. So Capacity wise, it did pass beyond my expectation.

These are my own point of views how I come to choose an ASUS to replace my needs over my laptop. There are some pros and cons from shifting from a laptop to a netbook but I’ve realized the pros weighed more than the cons.

And ever since, I haven’t regret buying an ASUS as my new companion to life.

xo,

Jamie

It’s nice to be updated on gadgets but we should think more than twice if we really need it. More often than not, the “want” overwhelms the “need”.

    good advice damian! :)

Nowadays, we ought to be more practical with our expenses and money.

When I was deciding to purchase a new netbook, price is definitely a big factor for choosing for me, especially since it was coming from my own money to purchase my ASUS. :)
